Slingshot Dakota - Dark Hearts - LP (2012)

Labels: Topshelf Records

I quite like a bit of Slingshot Dakota. This is their latest album and it has been a while coming. For anyone who liked the last album you are unlikely to be disappointed by this one. For those who don’t know them they come from Pennsylvania and play a style of melancholy indie rock with a faint tinge of punk. They are a duo – keyboards and drums “” and have a simplistic, keys-led sound. I like the opening pairing of “œIntro” and “œMay Day” with its upbeat drumming but downbeat lyrics (“œWe’re waiting/We’re waiting for our friends to die”). The mood is less than cheery throughout and that’s no bad thing. The tail-end of the album is particularly nice and downbeat. “œCassette” is sad and slow and springs into life towards the end “” it’s the best song on here for me. You then have the lovely “œWords” and the last song, a sad piano-led track called “œGood Year” about friends passing away which makes for a somber ending. Whilst this album misses some of the louder kind of tracks that were standouts on the last album, it’s really on the more straightforward, sadder songs that they excel this time around. Carly’s voice is great throughout too “” a real soothing listen. I will definitely come back to some of these songs and it’s more than solid overall. It’s an album that seems to suit a late night listen too.
