This is the latest album from Madrid’s Ulises Lima having previously recorded a demo CD and a 7inch. It has been sitting in our digital review pile for a while – just rotting there alone and not being picked up. That’s a bit of a travesty really as this is pretty great. Their sound channels the likes of Sinaloa and also more melodic stuff like Jawbreaker, but with a grubbier sound and certainly some 90s emo leanings. They even recall Fugazi on some tracks particularly in the vocals which move from sung to yelled and strained but are always kept in check. Some of these songs were on “A Thousand Words” but get a rejig on here and are all the better for it. It’s very strong throughout and when they really hit the mark it hits some dizzy heights. A number of these songs are some of my favourites of the year. “The River” is mind-blowing – I love the riff on this one and also the ending about looking in the mirror. “Old Habits” is a slower song that cranks up the emo with a drifting ending that flirts with a late Bob Tilton sound and, again, it is fantastic. They wouldn’t be out of place playing gigs with the likes of Plaids either. This record seems to have flown right under the radar as I have not seen much talk of it but if you like any of the bands I have mentioned I would definitely give this a listen as it is really great. Very few better records than this were released in 2012.
