A Thousand Arrows - Défaillance - CD (2012)

Labels: Circuitscene Records
Review by: James Williams

A Thousand Arrows are another hardcore band from the bustling Cardiff scene. Their
debut full length Défaillance was released in June last year. A Thousand Arrows’
sound in modern and melodic, but it also has a sense of throwback to bands like
The Hurt Process and “œBetween Order And Model” era Funeral For A Friend. It’s
got a post-hardcore slant to it, with melodic guitars and vocals that switch between
a raspy scream and cleanly sung. The production is good and A Thousand Arrows
throw in different effects and textures. They throw a garage-punk vocal effect into
“œThe Merchant of Death is Dead” which gives their sound a more caustic edge. Their
penchant for grand, instrumental passages becomes more obvious, the further you go
into Défaillance, as does their appreciation for At The Drive-In. Overall, it’s a decent
effort and take on a genre that in recent years has become quite full and while it won’t
be to everyone’s taste, it’s very listenable and has a good vibe.
