Interesting album here, but one that’s maybe too firmly lodged in the ‘solid’ camp to become anyone’s firm favourite. The first few seconds tick by aimlessly, a lazy stretch of delay pedal wibble that suggest you may be in for a dull post-rock ride. While those elements do play a part they’re thankfully kept in check, the songs condensed down to three minutes or so and suggesting punchy post-hardcore rather than any sprawling, nth rate EITSisms. Tuneful, concise and well-written, things recall the rare moments when they let Joe Lally sing a Fugazi song, a less dull Channels or that band History I reviewed a few years back who no-one probably listened to. Things head toward darker, crunchier climes as the album rounds out with large, looming powerchords underpinning the croon of tracks like ‘Sophia’ in an entertainingly meaty way, and overall it’s definitely worth a go-around or two if you dig Hum, Quicksand or the idea of a moodier Burning Airlines.
