CityCop - Seasons - 12

Labels: Flannel Gurl Records
Review by: MH

This is some rather unusual acoustic emo for want of a better term. As well as acoustic guitar there are bass and drums which both thicken the sound out. The first track is a talky recital of Bukowski’s “Bluebird” poem backed by some acoustic picking and eventually bass and drums before it flies off the handle briefly before its quieter ending. I quite like the quirkiness of this one. The next four songs are all named after seasons (they’ve also released it on four different colours of vinyl to represent each season). Cap’n Jazz appear to be one of their influences but the vocals get way more frantic. There are also sniffs of some more unusual jazz and Latin influences in their sound particularly in the acoustic guitar playing on the quieter moments. The tracks get stronger over the course of the EP and the last two are particularly chaotic and desperate. “Winter” does it for me with its slower pace, sad, sad opening and desperate feel – great song. This EP is really one that took me some time to fully appreciate as I got my head around the more unusual influences but I really quite like it now. There is a load more where this came from on their Bandcamp page too.
