“Yan Yan Tethera” – what’s that then? Actually, it is a sheep counting rhyme/system traditionally used by shepherds but this is some quirky and fast post punk from Sheffield. I must admit I wasn’t hugely enamoured by this on initial listens but I quite like it now. They remind me a bit of Bilge Pump, mainly due to the awkward rhythms and some of the offbeat lyrics, but it is heavier and has a bigger sound. Back to the lyrics, the gang vocal at the end of “Fourfive” is not something i was expecting to hear, that’s for sure. It’s pretty shouty all round and they barely pause for breath flying through all eleven tracks. One song sounds like a fast version of “Birdhouse In My Soul”, another is based around a terrace-like chant about a steamship whilst the stop-start rhythm of “Biketheft” makes me think of the Cardiacs before it gets more frantic and rocking. On the whole, this is bolshy, brash and lairy stuff – probably quite fun to catch them live. I cannot imagine that the coupling of “Loincloth” and “Steamship” would not go down an absolute storm live – huge riffs, a pummelling rhythm section and great shouty bits. Can I say that they remind me of a mixture of Bilge Pump, System Of A Down, The Cardiacs and Queen? No? Oh dear, it’s too late….
