Lake Michigan is something I have heard good things about but hadn’t quite got round to giving him a proper listen so when I saw this on the reviews list I thought it would be as good a time as any to give him a proper go. He is one guy from York with an acoustic guitar who plays some hushed, slow and sad songs in a similar vein to American Football and Owen. It is very sparse musically but has a warm feel to it and the understated vocals are great. The fingerpicking is very pretty and melancholy too. The blend of singing and the odd spoken word on opener “Sleet” is really nice and lyrically this has a lot more depth than a lot of acoustic guitar wielding singers these days. For me, this is definitely some music that I get more out of at different times. I was listening to this on the train on the way to a stag do in Munich the other day but it was only really on the way home when I was feeling sorry for myself and feeling like death that it really started to click and I had it on repeat. I also like listening to this last thing at night – quite a lot in fact. Lovely.
