Eskatologia - Stormens öga - CD (2012)

Labels: Halvfabrikat
Review by: Edward Ling

I was expecting a dank Scandinavian doom and satanism fest from this and was, initially, pleasantly surprised. Opening up with a tight and and almost melodic take on grindcore, with a vocals straight out of Scum-era Napalm Death / ENT, it all nails along brightly at a fair old pace. Catchy and not lacking in intent or grunt. From around track 3 onwards though it goes a bit bombastic and somehow Rammstein-ish, and matters quickly sink into a more run-of-the-mill black metal skwawk-a-rama. There are at least three vocalists having a pop in there, one of whom I think may be female and unfortunately gets rather annoying by the end. Lyrically, of course, it’s dark as you like, if more on the tree-hugging end of the black metal / doom / grind spectrum: less blood ritual and church-burning and more “œwe’re all fucked” and “œreligion is bad”. The name kind of gives it away “” Eskatologia being a corruption of “œEschatological”, a dry academic term descriptive of Doomsday obsessives “” more erudite than Dark Filthpig or something. Maybe I’m being harsh. If you see gigs as an opportunity to get ripped on perry and whatever class C narcs the kids are into these days, and to hang out with pale-faced goth chicks with ornate eye make up, then this is game on.
