Penny Cocks - Do It Cock - CD (2012)

Labels: BCore
Review by: Ted Reynolds

Spanish 70’s style punk/pub rock. More pub rock than punk I guess. The second song is a sort of Northern Soul punk song. You know how Snuff might do things with horns, and genuinely be good rather than make you immediately want to leave a venue? Well, this makes me want to throw my drink to the ground, have a tantrum and leave instantly. It’s like the singer has seen the Commitments, and gone ‘you know that put on gravel in the singers voice, that’s so forced he’s bound to end up with a real throat issue later in life? I
want that’. I think he made a mistake. Having said all that, the third song ‘I Like It’ is a pretty catchy number, but I still don’t like his voice. When he tones it down like he does on ‘Obsession Girl’ it’s much better.
That’s a common theme actually, 80% of the record is catchy poppy pub punk, but I just can’t get aboard with
his gravelly voice, it doesn’t sound natural, like he has just thought “what’s a good punky voice? gravel?
Heather Small from M People?” it ruins it for me. Too many songs as-well, no album needs 17 songs even if they are only a couple of minutes long, don’t push your luck.
