Doe - Summer Tape - Tape (2013)

Labels: Keroleen Records
Review by: MH

DOE are one of my favourite bands that I have discovered since leaving London and I had been itching to hear some new stuff having been impressed by their debut demo earlier this year. I actually wrote a review of that one but was gazumped by Kunal who had already written one just before me in the clamour of reviewers fighting over the demo. This time I got in early like a demon. These four tracks are a little grungier than last time out. The focus is still 90s indie rock and the opener “Julia Survived” sets the bar high with its confident swagger. “Oh, Nostalgia!” is like a less poppy Lemuria at the start before it really kicks in and “C.A.E” hits harder than the brilliant “Let Me In” off their demo. They round things off with a raucous Pixies cover version (“Gigantic”) which is faithful to the original and suggests one of their major influences. This is an excellent set of songs. The vocals are great – powerful and confident – and the songwriting is superb again. Highly recommended.
