If you discount LPs then this is the first 12inch Self Defense Family (in their various guises) have put out. Apparently these three new songs were recorded whilst on tour two years ago in 2011. I was well aware of the first track (“It’s Not Good For The Man To Be Alone”) which is an absolute beast. It has been on the bandcamp page for a good while now and I have been flogging it to death. It’s a mid-paced ranty thing with spat, scathing vocals and it’s one of the best songs I’ve heard all year. In fact, it’s one of my favourite songs by this band and they have a ton of great songs already. Angry song of the year for me and the bleak lyrics are superb. They then do totally different things on the other two tracks. The second track is more post punky with female backing vocals and almost an 80s feel to it. Then, the lengthy “The Bomber Will Always Get Through” is claustrophobic, slow and hypnotic with spoken vocals. Brilliant – this band has been around for years but they are still making me want to hear every song they put out.
