I was a little perplexed by this one from the start with the band name and then also the title of the EP. I’m not sure who Dirk Frazel is but I just kept getting images of Frazzles crisps in my head which, although those crisps were admittedly great, was rather off-putting. However, having reverted back from crispy bacon crisp-snobbery I thought I’d give this a go and it’s actually pretty decent. The band comes from Springfield, Missouri and they play a chaotic but melodic variety of emo that shares similarities with bands like Algernon Cadwallader and Snowing. The vocals are of the crying/screaming kind and low in the mix. Sometimes the guitar sound is really pretty and happily they don’t get too fiddly. By the way, they might well be the tallest band in emo right now and if that’s not a great accolade to have then I don’t know what is. So, yeah – this is good – just don’t judge a book by its cover (or a band or EP by their names) and all that.
