I have here another tape – numbered 100 out of 100 which is a fittingly geeky number to satisfy my OCD. I am without tape player at the moment but the wonders of modern technology allow me to listen to this through a computer and ipod. On said tape is some fuzzy and lo-fi indie pop from Philadelphia’s Manors who put a neat 3-track demo out a while back. This time they deliver a short full-length of 10 new songs and it’s pretty nice, fuzzed-out and melancholy. Dayna Evans’ vocals are brilliantly laid-back and sound great alongside the summery bedroom-style of the music and recording. Strummed, distorted guitar is a feature on most of the songs and there are choruses that verge on hypnotic with repeated lines like on “But You Know That”. The offbeat “Teeth Dreams” is the standout song for me. As stripped-bare as Waxahatchee’s “American Weekend” LP, it’s a touching track that I keep replaying. Closing track “No One Told You” is another gem. I am not sure who to compare this to. Bloomer perhaps, but Manors is a lot more stripped down at times and certainly slower. This one will be hovering around my end of year lists – lovely.
