This is tagged as alternative folk country and it’s really stripped-bare and haunting. Virginia Sook are a Brisbane-based acoustic trio. The lead vocals really are gorgeous and fragile and there is some lovely harmonising at play alongside the subtle instrumentation. The overall feeling is one of sadness and this has been getting some frequent late night airtime at home alongside the likes of Lake Michigan. It is the most threadbare, finger-picked tracks that I get the most out of. The opener ‘Zeitgeist’ and ‘Garden Gnome’ are the pick of the bunch for me. Ideal for peaceful, late nights. (I’ve also been listening to this a fair bit at work – I keep having to hide the cover art on my ipod though as my boss just wouldn’t understand!)
