Imagine it was 2003 again. Wouldn’t that be good? Black Flag wouldn’t exist and The Darkness would be the biggest band in Britain. It would be great. The good news is Cannon for Cordoba have come forward in time to take us back.
After the formality of the build from nowhere intro, it’s time for the At the Drive-In riffs. You could sneak ‘Give Something back’ onto a mix of early ATD-I and no one would even notice.
It pretty much business as usual after that: tight arrangements, heartfelt emotion, big dynamics and big choruses. So big they kind of remind you of Hundred Reasons/Funeral For a Friend. Who were big about when, 11 years ago?
The EP flows along nicely enough. Until ‘A Monthly Tristesse’. Which has that fucking sample from Network that goes “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore”, that is second only to F.Lee Ermey’s drill instructor as the most obvious movie dialogue ever.
Which is central problem. The songs are actually quite good; it’s just that there is too much focus on doing exactly what is expected of them.
