Troubled Sleep - Spread Out - 7

This is the fourth set of 4 songs by Troubled Sleep and if the likes of Football, etc. and Rainer Maria are your thing then there is plenty on offer here. Amongst the members, there are various connections to other bands including both Self Defense Family and Bridge & Tunnel but this is pretty different to those bands. This is some top-notch indie rock although once the rhythm section gets going there is some post hardcore thrown into the mix. Having seen them live in London recently I can tell you the drummer puts in a huge shift with bags of energy and the drums take quite a pounding. The first track, “Spread Thin” is full of nervy discordance with talky male vocals that whirl around hypnotically before Mary’s vocals come in. You’ll find something in the lyrics to this one too if 2013 wasn’t a great year. “Pop Camera Tale” starts off more gently but again that rhythm section drives things on before “33rd St.” discusses leaving and the mundanity that is left behind. “37 Floors” is another fine tune. There were a lot of strong EPs and 7inches last year but for me this is one of the best that 2013 had to offer.
