Beast As God - s/t - Tape (2013)

This is good. Really bloody good. Four songs of barbaric, metal-infused hardcore with a clear hankering for classic 90s sounds. Bloodlet meets Gehenna? Disembodied meets Unruh? Either of those would just about do it, and as you can probably guess I’m drooling a bit on my keyboard as I type. It’s as though every element has been crafted by a master armourer: each riff, hook or huffed-out vocal line measured for heft, balance and its ability to cause maximum bone-splintering damage. While each song has its own distinct merits I reckon closer ‘Eulogie’ might just win out for me, the hurtling blasts reined in and replaced by a lengthier, mid-paced knuckle-drag wherein the vocals sound like an angry hog that’s been wrapped in a tarpaulin and heaved in the back of a pickup truck. Champion!
