To be honest, this is the kind of thing I usually have a right old moan about. Since their debut, nothing really seems to have changed for Grime. They’ve stayed static. Paralysed either by misery or an obstinate refusal to relent. They are still rigidly adherent to the caustic sludge template laid down by the likes of Grief, Eyehategod and Cavity. Nothing new has crept in, nothing has been lost or shorn away. If anything the songs have maybe been tightened, and the production has been made more biting, but that’s about it. And while these are all factors I’ve whinged about elsewhere, somehow Grime make it ok. When you play this shit, after all, you don’t want any post-whatever elements or shoegaze influences dappling the horror. You don’t want lengthy treatises that try to align the music to the teachings or obscure occultists or unheard-of eastern European authors. You don’t want progression. You just want life-hating vitriol, oozing riffs and vocals that’re the aural equivalent of rust and old blood being cleaned from a bayonette. If you want the best place to start then try ‘Giving Up’. Failing that, anywhere else is as good a place as anywhere else.
‘Enjoy’.
