There’s something truly wonderful about this LP. The 14 tracks are often deceptively simple – a programmed drum beat, a bassline, some nicely placed synths – but a closer listen reveals some of the nuances of each song, as if every section has been pored over, finessed and only included if it matters. At times this feels like an ambient electronica album, there is a bit of krautrock in there, some noisy guitar, but somehow it all comes together into a coherent LP.
I especially love the song ‘A Life of Crime’, with its sweet post-punk bassline and foggy vocals, sounding like a lost song from the Belong ‘Common Era’ record, and maybe wish there were a few more songs like this on ‘Chime Grove’ (the gloomy atmosphere is right on). ‘Peacock Pie’ is a winner too, again featuring those sparse, almost-whispered vocals buried within a plethora of sounds working in unison to push the track forward.
Basically it sounds like the guys involved know what they’re doing, have played on a few records of various genres, and are focused on their craft. This is actually true, as this band features members of the Crimson Curse (!), Tristeza and more.
Not quite sure why only half of the album is available for (paid) download on Bandcamp. Sort it out, guys.
