Walleater - Walleater - 2x7

I first stumbled across this band after looking them up having seen their name on flyers with several other UK bands I’m into like Plaids and Wade, and last year’s ‘A Masking Aura’ was a nice little taster. I’ve seen them tagged as slowcore and shoegaze and both of those are good indicators to their sound. This is four tracks that will appear on two 7inches but Bandcamp has all four ready for you to hear and download now.

Opener “Give In To Me” is some downbeat and grungey shoegaze laced with a really smart riff that runs throughout. It’s a super start and there are hints of an appreciation of 90s grunge bands in the guitar sound too and dissonance and distortion are both orders of the day that continue into the moody “Just A Boy”. “Glow” will kick off the second 7inch. It’s a brooding, building instrumental that has me thinking of early Swervedriver once the wah-wah gets going. The last track has a shimmering, twinkly opening and drifts along ploddingly. That shimmering guitar line repeats on and off throughout the track and is rather lovely. This song brings the sadness and builds and twists to a more tumultuous ending.

Lately I’m noticing more and more shoegaze bands popping out of the woodwork but not all of them do it well. Walleater do though and are very good already. I’m looking forward to hearing a lot more from this lot.
