Gaptooth - Connections/Departures - CD (2013)

Labels: self released
Review by: Oli Saunders

Gaptooth is a one woman electropop project, with dance beats laying the backdrop for Hannah’s vocals. The songs are about all sorts and each one is carefully crafted and well thought through. It’s not typical dance music, in that I can’t ever imagine dancing to it, but I realise that’s not always a necessity; I mean, I love chillout dance music and I barely do anything but slowly nod my head when listening to that, though I’m often driving when I play it so that’s a good thing.

However, I have two major issues with the music and these are going to end up dominating the review. Some of the beats sound like a school keyboard megamarathon and become, well, a bit annoying. The start of ‘No Man Is An Island’ sounds like a level of Lemmings on Mayhem difficulty. The end of Baggage is another case in point. Secondly, I am not convinced the beats and the vocals work well together. This is more worrisome as the music is built around it! And I suppose this just becomes something to disagree over. Overall, there are plenty of good ideas in here but also plenty of things that put me off.
