Labels: Discos Huelga – Existencia – We Are The Daughters – y La AgonÃa de Vivir
Review by: Oli Saunders
I just saw this on the Bis Aufs Messr newsletter and my eyes lit up. It’s been 7 years since Enoch Ardon last released a record. Both their previous 12” and 7” are examples of euro screamo at its very best and I wish I could have seen them back in the day. Their existence, I believe, helped to spawn/influence several other excellent bands such as Ciudad Del Cabo, Gone With The Pain and Heads And Heads. Spain’s (or, to be more accurate, 10 people in Spain) take on the genre was an excellent offering to the screamo gods.
So why resurrect after 7 years? For the love of it I hope. We return to the chaos of old as the band race through five songs, hardly pausing for breath. It’s just nice to see someone doing this in 2014.
However, comparisons can’t help be made with the band’s earlier offerings, and these new songs do not grip me as much. The intensity has reduced, the vocals are less harsh and less breathless. The guitars cycle through chords less fast. I don’t know what I was expecting but it feels a little bit forgettable and uncompetitive. And in all honesty, if it didn’t say the name Enoch Ardon at the top I’d probably pass it by pretty quickly. I’ll be sticking with the band’s earlier efforts but keeping an eye on what they’re up to
