Labels: Tiny Engines
Review by: MH
Another day, another new record from the Tiny Engines label. This one brings together two bands who put out two of my favourite albums in 2013. Little Big League are on side A with two short new songs and the production here lends them something of a live sound. Michelle Zauner’s unique vocals are a little more restrained than on their “These Are Good People” LP but this is a cracking pair of tunes. Ovlov’s song on side B, “The Great Crocodile”, is almost 6 minutes long but one that certainly doesn’t outstay its welcome. Their familiar howling guitar sound reminiscent of Dinosaur Jr. dominates the first two minutes of the track before they drop into the background as more melodic vocals come in. Things are very 90s indie rock on this track and it’s a nice contrast of melody and noise once again from Ovlov. A great song. Hard to find fault here – this is a cracking split record that leaves me wanting more from both bands.
NB Today I hear that Ovlov are splitting up shortly after they finish their current run of dates in the US – they weren’t around for a very long time but what a marvellous band they were.
EDIT – It turns out they haven’t split up – what a relief!
