Plough Lines were one of only a handful of new bands who blew me away last year and it’s only a few seconds into the opener, “Henry Make Good”, that I get the feeling I’m going to like this – some smart, downbeat and weary guitar tones open the track before the vocals come in. Those vocals are heavily worn-out and just a little beyond spoken, almost deadpan for the most part. This one is verging on slowcore but two minutes in you get those familiar Christie Front Drive-style chord progressions which were apparent on last year’s tape too. “Dialtones” is up next – it’s a little more ragged and another fine tune. The sad and weary third track is probably my favourite with its refrain of “We’ve never been anywhere worth mentioning”. Overall there is a slightly bigger sound than before but only slightly and this new set of songs only serves to convince me of how good they are. I absolutely love the sparse cover art too. Great work all round.
