Abysse - En(d)grave - CD (2013)

Labels: Blue Wave
Review by: Oli Saunders

Isis and 5ive spring to mind as Abysse play the first notes of ‘Eagle of Haast’. Post-metal, which is basically a faster and harsher version of post-rock, in this case utilising no vocals. But there are neat guitar solos if that’s your thing and everything combines well. The drumming is something I always look out for with bands like this – a variety of interesting grooves is essential and here it does not dissapoint. There are moments when I really get into the music but it is not sustained. Something about the repetive but sludgy riffs of 5ive entrance me, which doesn’t happen here. I think overall we’re talking about a band a league or two down but En(d)grave is a good effort and has its moments.
