Labels: Matador
Review by: Captain Fidanza
This is from Matador records, a label for whom I will always the greatest affection because despite their catchphrase being, “We go to the Mat”¦ for the artists you Adore,” they released, “I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One” by Yo LA Tengo.
Unfortunately, this here album carries before it a press release containing the phrase, “(this) debut album sparkles with the harmonic dissonance and high-strung urgency of their underground rock forebears,” which is possibly the most ridiculously florid sentence written this week about a band with a new record out.
Fortunately, the music itself is actually pretty good, although, perhaps in pursuit of the spirit of the troubadour mentioned in the literature, the vocals occasionally flirt dangerously with that cockend from Duran Duran.
