Invisible Labour - Put Your Briefs in Your Briefcase - Tape (2014)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

This one materialised in the post the other day and I had a quick whirl on the ole Bandcamp. The first song got underway with extensive, intensive fiddly math, and I figured it was going to be an instrumental, and I almost moved on to the next thing. But then I noticed at the bottom it said they had 2 dudes doing vocals, so I hung in there, and boy, I’m glad I did as this is really good. They shove in a few interesting grooves in that opening track, but it’s beyond there where things get really interesting. “œBabies With Beards” is a fast paced barn burner, vocals are spewed out and the guitars clang about furiously but with a masterful sense of skewed melody. It’s the exact kind of punk rock that I enjoy, to the point where I can’t quite think what it reminds me of. They change direction yet again on “œGentleman”, slowing things down somewhat and the vocals are much less frenetic, clearly got over it on the previous song. Parts of this one are intricate and remind me of Party of Helicopters. It’s really rather good. “œPOS” is lumbering post punk with shouty / spoken vocal, down to earth lyrics about buying the same lunch every day from the same girl at the same sandwich place. Things wrap up on the swaying emo groove of “œShuttlebus”, this one is right up my street.

All 5 tracks on here are different, but they nail each one – impressive stuff. Oh, and apparently they have already split up. Typical.
