Here’s another band that I’ve been meaning to listen to for a while and it gets harder to stumble across UK bands these days from this far away in Brisbane. They’ve put out a fair few releases since 2012 judging by their Bandcamp page and reside in Sheffield. My lateness to the party means I’m hearing them for the first time with the band having recently evolved into a 3-piece having added Adam from Collider to their ranks. “Can I Join Ur Slowcore Band?” is the opener and it’s mid-paced with kind of spoken and measured vocals in the first part of the track. I’m immediately drawn in by the offbeat nature of the lyrics – the first line is “I broke into your handbag, it was full of mobile phones”. It makes me think of Bilge Pump and the oddities in their lyrics. “xoxo” opens a little slower and moodier but has a smart riff opening the tracks and bigger vocals – you could almost call this one catchy although it’s still pretty mathy. “Skin Merchant” is longer and plods along moodily – there’s a nice unpredictability to all three of these tracks. Kind of hard to define – is it mathy post punk? Not sure – it’s good though – they’ve got me interested so I’m off to check out the rest of their stuff. ..and I should probably hurry up as it sounds like there is a full length in the offing too.
