This is the second sludgified band called Wormwood whose acquaintance I’ve made. The other one were proper scummy, did a split with Teen Cthulhu and had releases out on Parasitic and 20 Buck Spin. These guys aren’t nearly as scummy, though the overall notion behind them is a positive one, with the band juggling Floor, Neurosis and Noothgrush influences while injecting some understated Bastard Noise fizzles here and there. Rather than trundling off into eternity the songs are compact and wrap themselves up briskly, the hoary riffs and roars doing their filthy business and quickly slamming the door behind them. This I appreciate as there’s no time to get weary, but ultimately I feel this Wormwood are maybe a bit too ‘pro’ and aware of what they’re doing to really destroy or disgust. It’s ok enough, but I’d recommend you try the other Wormwood first before getting down and dirty with this one.
