Foolishly passed on Zom’s earlier material, but on advice I gave their debut LP a go and it pretty much knocked my socks off. This eight-song collection manages a perfect mix of murk and brevity, launching the glowering, tumultuous sounds of Incantation, Autopsy and Dismember into a pitched battle with the knuckle-dragging density and vicious directness that made the Crowd Control LP so powerful. From impenetrable blurs and cloacal gargles to killer riffing and genuinely memorable songwriting ‘Flesh Assimilation’ is a feat of pure, primitive joy. A terrible, terrifying woebegone sort of joy to be sure, but, of course, it wouldn’t be half as effective if it didn’t bring such negative feelings bubbling to the surface.
