Lull - Dead or Alone - Download (2015)

Labels: self released
Review by: Andy Malcolm

This is dead nice. Really simple and easy going indie rock, just chilling out, checking out their shoes whilst playing guitar, slacking off, wishing they had been born 20 years earlier so they could have sounded like this in the 90s instead of 2015 (they don’t look to be in their late 30s anyway, maybe they have discovered one weird trick, fair play if so). It sounds like about 900 bands that I have owned records by at some point in time, probably something on Merge. It’s very well done, you could see it playing on some scenes in an angsty movie where indie rock kids meet in a coffee shop and bond over a band t-shirt, have a coffee and then are falling into love and chaos for 105 minutes. There’s plenty to like here, although it might be just a tiny bit too perfectly judged to quite be your new favourite band unless this is the first time you ever heard something like this. If someone told you they were in a band called Lull, what do you think they’d sound like? You’d figure they’d sound exactly like these 3 songs. A little more abrasion and personality will perhaps come with further days of being in a rock group, but for now this is certainly an enjoyable quarter of an hour.
