Bong are a band who I’m always happy to rhapsodise about, but to be honest it’s becoming increasingly hard to find new things to say about them. I say this not as a criticism, and it isn’t that their sound is staying still, it’s just… I don’t know. Their side of this split is great, as ever, a clamorous collision of Amon Düül II, Popol Vuh and the cloying atmosphere of drone metal. Pyramidion I was expecting some sort of stoner racket from, but instead they draw from similar points of reference. Sure, they’re more sprightly and have a jammed-out 70s rock vibe about them, but I’d say it’s one that’s been influenced by Can at least as much as it has by the likes of Cream or Dark. Overall it’s a great LP, with both bands complementing each other perfectly and playing the kind of stuff you could happily keep on repeat until you starve to death.
