Labels: Bombed Out Records – Reeks Of Effort
Review by: MH
I never quite know what to expect with Saturday’s Kids as they tend to change their sound a fair bit. As this kicks off with “Seraphim” you can hear the Sonic Youth influence but it’s so driven and full of energy at the same time. That urgency and energy carries through into the riffs in “I Regret You” which follows the opener. In fact, the first half of this is pretty relentless and the brilliantly titled “Take A Minute And Step Inside My Head And See How Fucked Up It Is” ends a blustering A side. There is then an 8-minute+ track which opens side B and it’s here where the record starts to evolve as this one is more in the realm of slowcore with some fuzzed-up and slow-building shoegaze thrown in and it’s a cracker. The melodic “Destroyer” is up next and the almost deadpan vocals suit this one nicely. I started writing this review a few weeks ago from the digital files and for some reason I’d written that the tracks after this are a little less on the urgent side compared to the opening half of the record but listening to this on vinyl now that the record has made it to Australia I can hear that that is absolute nonsense. “Bone, Crystal, Ice” is an absolute barnstormer for starters. The LP on the whole is a bit of a stormer and a fitting one for a band like Saturday’s Kids to bow out on. Yep – another band on Bombed Out comes to an end.
