Obe - Exit Planet Crust - Download (2015)

Labels: self released
Review by: Kunal Nandi

As a relatively old fart that does music “œreviews”, I am cursorily aware and fairly wary of a “œpost-metal / post-rock” scene that breeds bands that appear to value a kind of clean technicality over real emotional feeling, and that can be totally OK but also totally unforgivable if things start to get boring. If any navels get gazed at or chins stroked then get the hell out of here. My attention did eventually waver as “œExit Planet Crust” proceeded but there were many finely mathematical moments of big riffing, melodic instru-metal action here. In what is probably THE most obscure reference points I have ever employed, Obe remind me of a couple of bands that were knocking around about a decade ago; Louisiana’s The Object At The End Of History and Ireland’s Rest, who both made magically epic and spacey instrumental riff monsters that combined immediacy with exploration. Obe are definitely on their way out there, delivering nifty passage after passage with the requisite crunch. They also certainly went all out to make this sound good with a very crispy production job.
