Couldn’t tell you why, but previous Acid King releases never really clicked with me. They were one of those bands that part of my brain told me I should like while another just went “pffff.” Anyway, I’m liking this a whole lot more. It manages an addled, stumbling vibe that’s swaying somewhere between Electric Wizard and Bardo Pond, the riffs simultaneously crushing and comforting, the bass thrumming elegantly beneath the surface and Lori’s vocals weaving their way through the morass like creepers reclaiming a ruined castle. Amid the woozy, dreamlike psychotropica lurk crafty melodies and deceptively simple solos – shimmering golden threads that ensure the record is memorable while also providing markers by which you can find your way back home through the haze.
