Humours - The Onanist - Download (2015)

Labels: Eolian Empire
Review by: Alex Deller

Taut post-hardcore that dabbles in prog and post-rock waters as it winds its merry through these four songs. Despite the thing’s slender tracklist there’s still plenty to explore, from riffing that tends towards Shotmaker and second (i.e. best) album Drive Like Jehu to the lurching, rasping qualities you might expect from a Chris Spencer project and FX-heavy guitar antics that make me think of that excellent Wild Throne 12″. Wanton thumps give way to spaced-out, scifi-inflected moodiness, and precise, inventive playing is on display whether they’re trying to batter, browbeat or cause your synapses to misfire. I’ll admit that in their present state they’ve not won me over hook, line and sinker like other Eolian acts, but this is still an interesting start for a band who could, over the course of a full-length, potentially produce something special.
