Labels: Gnar Tapes – OSR
Review by: Oli Saunders
Released by Gnartapes and distributed online by OSR, I can get on alright with this one, at least at the start. Like a shambolic sounding Elliott Smith, Zach has a soft voice which has great potential. He often harmonises with himself and it works in places while getting too much in others. He uses some of his backing vocals as an instrument itself along with a keyboard. The repetitive sounds that are produced start to gnaw away at me after a while, especially the whistling. Please don’t write songs that have whistling in, thanks. The tape also becomes more and more experimental. It’s like a musical continuum which starts having structure and then moves along. By the end he’s like ‘fuck it, let’s see if I can fit 22 songs on this thing’. One guy drew parallels with this and the white album; I guess I’m on another planet.
