When a new release from Odd Box turns up in the inbox I tend to take note. Two White Cranes, Flemmings, The Ethical Debating Society and Chorusgirl amongst others have all put out cracking releases on the label this year. This time we have some lofi indie pop from Frozy who have been doing this for years. Their bandcamp suggests they have recorded over 50 songs prior to this new one so they’re well practiced. This is all while the three members are spread out across the UK, US and Europe.
The songs here are a little ramshackle but also show a nice restraint and more delicate side – “March Again” is as close as they get to anything noisy. There is nice interplay in the boy/girl vocals, where they, more often than not, sing together rather than taking turns, and the light jangle to the guitar sound is lovely. There are two instrumentals on here where they absolutely nail it. The first one is called “Ohio” and has something of a lofi, more ramshackle Real Estate sound to it while “Summer End” is subdued and downbeat. As far as the actual songs with vocals go I’d say that “Cardinals” is the pick of the bunch – the slightly more than spoken vocals on this one are perfect. There is a song on here called “Where Are You” which is a bit of a groover – you might even be able to dance to this one. Another winner from OddBox then.
