Haybaby - Sleepy Kids - LP (2015)

This is some big-sounding indie rock that harks back to the 90s and bands like The Breeders. I say “big” as the production and guitar sound are relatively clean (akthough they’re not afraid to crank up the noise and grunge on tracks like “Doored”) and the whole thing is bolstered by the rhythm section with some pretty energetic drumming and prominent bass. It’s only nine songs but it’s a tight, tight record. Every song on here is noteworthy and they have a real grooving thing going on. The vocals are a good fit with the music too – I’m reminded of Kristin Hersh when the rasp becomes more apparent on tracks like “Her”, which, incidentally, is a huge song. The way the guitars come back in to the grooving bass and drums just nails it completely. “Pizza Party” has a lurking menace about it before it’s bigger, squalling ending. “Shy” starts off grooving like something The Julie Ruin would write and “Edelweiss” towards the end just builds and builds. I could go on. This is an utterly brilliant record.
