Two instrumental doom numbers, both of which weigh in at roughly 20 minutes apiece. While I’m a keen one for all things heavy and sluggish, these days it has to be done better than just ‘right’ given how crowded the marketplace is – I’m basically seeking nothing less than total soul-wringing obliteration here, which is admittedly a bit of an ask. Unfortunately Canyon Of The Skull aren’t quite up to the task, and while they have their chops down pat and peddle a tasteful enough line in sturdy, well-hewn riffage it’s not the kind of stuff that’ll liquefy your bones while causing you to dwell on the sheer purposelessness of human existence. Instead they plug a gap while you cook a nice lunch or sweep up the leaves on the driveway – kinda ok and stuff, but not really the effect this kind of music should really be gunning for.
