Ordinary People - Nothing New - LP (2016)

Labels: Save Your Generation – Wiretap

These guys come from Missouri and have a bit of a penchant for the Midwestern sound of the 90s. The email that this came in on referenced Sunny Day Real Estate, Elliott, Christie Front Drive and Texas Is The Reason as well as Dowsing – not a bad set of bands if you ask me. While there’s a clear influence from some of those 90s bands, I’d say that Dowsing is the closest comparison but it’s a slightly chunkier, less jangly, less sad and less vulnerable Dowsing. Not to say that these songs don’t feel sad but they perhaps feel more bummed out and than sad. The vocals on here are kind of deadpan and restrained but still have something of a rasp to them when they get going which makes me think of the guy from Dikembe. What’s his name again? I forget. “Washington” is the song that I keep coming back to on here as well as the weary “Outside Me” which closes this. At seven songs long it doesn’t get close to outstaying its welcome either.
