Beastmaker - You Must Sin - 7

Labels: Rise Above
Review by: Alex Deller

Pretty solid doom metal, born of the same kind of Sabbath worship that gave us bands like Pentagram and Sheavy. The riffs loom, the beats plod, the arpeggios ring dourly and the bleary, nasal vocals sound kinda waterlogged, the whole thing seemingly the product of three people who’ve watched the ‘Dragonaut’ video so many times that their reality has started to twist at the edges. Whether you call them ‘traditional’ or ‘derivative’ is ultimately down to how charitable you’re feeling, but both songs are pulled off well enough and go to suggest that the upcoming album should prove to be an enjoyably atavistic diversion.
