This self released live tape from New York Post Punk/bit of everything band Death camp is a great little release. I went to it with no expectations and was surprised. I’m a fan of bands like TSOL and The Gun Club and there’s definitely elements of that in there, there’s a strong 80’s vibe, the vocals are reminiscent of Lee Ving from FEAR, there’s splatters of thrash, and then the second track on side one ‘strange beast’ is almost 80’s pop rock in feel, which sounds like it would be terrible doesn’t it? But it’s actually extremely catchy and enjoyable, and the stand out track by a mile.
When you get to the second side of the tape it’s feeling slightly more aggressive on ‘Young Tyrant’ and then it goes completely off the other end of the spectrum with a cover of the ‘Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence’ tune, and then back to angry again with ‘Punch/Line’. If there’s anything negative that can be said about this release, it is that it’s all over the shop and doesn’t feel especially ‘live’, but the fact it can’t be pinned down to a genre and you don’t know what to expect next kinda excites me.
