Labels: Reveal Records

Of all the things I have received from AM over the years, “A Lullaby Hum For Tired Streets” by this artist (recording then as Emphemetry) is my absolute favourite. Equally fantastic are his two releases from 2013 and 2015 which developed and enlarged upon the themes from that original release taking the listener into more strange and wonderful places to which they had never before been.
This record is, unsurprisingly, just as amazing as the three others I have received from this artist, although it is perhaps even more delicately beautiful, consisting as it does of eleven wonderfully arranged, spectral melodies that float out of the speakers and haunt the room like wraiths.
Classically minimalist is perhaps the label that best defines this music, although it doesn’t come anywhere near to describing how incredible and timeless it sounds and when the vocals begin, halfway into track five, far from breaking the spell cast by the lush instrumentals, they come as a delightful surprise, giving the previously ghostly experience a more human face.
Incidentally, Richard Birkin will be performing these skeletal hymns at The Good Ship in Kilburn on Tuesday 22nd of March.
