Primitive death-doom that worships at the altar of Hellhammer. In many ways, it should be a dismal failure: the guitars are thin; the drums are a delicate pitter-patter ; it’s a bit too long and there’s a weird disjointedness that makes me think of Dream Death’s innate awkwardness and concomitant ability to pull off a ruinous riff/key/time change in the face of overwhelming adversity. For all its many shortcomings, however, ‘Perpetual Blackness’ works. The vibe is there and it conjures a deep sense of rank discomfort … whether this is by design or happenstance is perhaps unknowable, but for now I’m happy enough to take things as I find them and enjoy the lumpen, unwieldy horror of it all as it rolls in from the sea and envelops the land.
