Playing complex, tangled, awkward death metal, NYC marauders Pyrrhon seem hell-bent on making life as difficult as possible for themselves and their listeners. The five tracks here roil and rumble, wrought with niggling intricacies, jazz-inspired suckerpunches and moments of sharp, wince-inducing dissonance that serve as a jagged backdrop for frontman Doug Moore’s huffs, puffs and phleghm-clotted death rattles. The spectre of Gorguts looms large, and the band effectively capture the unsettling sense of weirdness of this fringe genre’s superior acts (Ehnahre, Dimesland, Ulcerate, Phobocosm…) … something which is no mean feat in itself, but more so given this EP’s all-too-brief duration.
