Oh my. This CD comes packaged in a colourful material purse, very unique. I love the origami folding of the insert too to create a hexagonal paper envelope. The album starts off with a man groaning before the percussion comes in, consisting of instruments that I don’t know the names of. Then the guy starts screaming over the top. This reminds me of Raccoo-oo-oon or Odd Clouds due to the psych-folk feel, but really those are the only two bands I know who play really weird music. Female chanting vocals come in and the guy continues to scream with pain. It’s very atmospheric and I have some appreciation of it – it’s just not what I’d choose to play while relaxing at home – what would be the right time to put this on I wonder.
Track 2 begins with the sound effects of glass being dropped into the bottle bank. There’s a really annoying whistling sound too. The vocals are spoken here and work well, both male and female and in Russian (I think). Track 3 is an 8 minute long interlude with not much happening. Look, you’ve got the idea by now. Staraya Derevnya don’t play the rules and have some interesting ideas about what music is. I’ll leave it at that
