Found myself quite enjoying Walleater’s ‘I/II’ LP from last year, largely because they kept their hazy-brained shoegaze influences in check with some nice crunchy edges. These two tracks I’m feeling less, and it’s precisely because those edges have been buffed down in favour of a smoother, more expansive finish that’s easier to swallow but also easier to forget. Swervedriver, Antarctica and Kill Holiday all spring to mind, and since the press release mentioned Foo Fighters I now can’t shake a vague ‘Everlong’ comparison. Personally this all makes for something that I wouldn’t particularly hurry back to – the songs are a bit soppy, a bit plain and generally the kind of fine that your significant other drops to let you know things really aren’t.
