It’s fitting to be checking Geist out on the 15th anniversary of “Jane Doe”‘s release, because let’s face it, the shadow cast by Converge hangs heavy across the scene even now. Geist certainly take their fair share of cues but have the very good grace to still find a way to come up with the goods from the tried and tested formula. I don’t think I’ll ever tire of that whole “guitar break and/or drum fill before it goes into full gallop mode” approach. It’s very well performed and sounds boss. File alongside fellow UK heavyweights Harrowed for flying the flag for the UK’s contingent for this kind of thing.
Michigan mob Sunlight’s Bane are a harsher proposition with a slightly thinner sound but more in the way of a chaotic, grinding, speedier approach. There’s more in the way of black metal in the vocals and the overall drained vibe. They’re very good also, and make a nice counterpoint to Geist’s burliness. Job done, let’s go home.
