Aptly enough, given their name, Lies kinda hoodwinked me: I didn’t much care for the pro hardcore bands members played in previously and wouldn’t have been inclined to check ’em out had I known their lineage, but this is actually alright. Theirs is a meat n’ potatoes, metal-tinged brand of hardcore from which all fat has been trimmed. It charges along, brimming over with vitriol and ultimately finds itself in the same sonic ballpark as Nails, Terror, Skitsystem and Ringworm, or at least some bastard amalgam thereof. This release compiles their previous, self-released ‘Abuse’ EP and the newer 12″ for Southern Lord, and while I’d hesitate to say it’ll rattle to your core it should at least serve you well enough when you next need to knock down a wall, uproot a truculent tree stump or perform some other task that requires brute force over precision engineering.
